India has taken a significant step towards promoting green energy with the initiation of five pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission focused on the transport sector. These projects will see the deployment of 37 vehicles, including hydrogen fuel cell-based and hydrogen internal combustion engine-based vehicles, along with 9 hydrogen refuelling stations. The selected routes for the trial cover key cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Kochi, among others. Major companies like TATA Motors, Reliance Industries, and NTPC are actively involved in these projects, with the government providing financial support of approximately Rs 208 crore. The Ministry's objective is to develop commercially viable technologies for using hydrogen as fuel in buses and trucks, emphasizing the importance of supporting infrastructure like hydrogen refuelling stations. The projects are expected to be operational within the next 18-24 months, marking a crucial milestone towards scaling up green hydrogen technologies in the country. The launch of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, with a substantial budget allocation until FY 2029-30, underscores India's commitment to promoting environmental sustainability and driving the adoption of cleaner energy sources in the transport sector.
