Indian Railways is gearing up for a groundbreaking shift in its operations as it plans to initiate field trials for the country's first hydrogen-fueled train by January 2025. The project signifies a crucial move towards promoting cleaner and more sustainable rail transportation in India. The upcoming prototype of the hydrogen-powered train is expected to be ready by December 2024, with field trials commencing shortly after. The conversion of a 1200 kW Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) into a hydrogen fuel cell-based Distributed Power Rolling Stock (DPRS) reflects Indian Railways' commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. By harnessing hydrogen fuel cell technology, the trains will generate electricity emission-free, utilizing only water as a by-product. The long-term vision includes deploying 35 train sets, each with six cars, powered by hydrogen fuel cell propulsion systems across selected sections of the rail network. The project also involves comprehensive safety evaluations and approvals from reputed organizations to ensure the seamless integration of hydrogen technology. This initiative is part of Indian Railways' broader strategy to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030, aligning with global efforts in sustainable transportation.
