Indian Sugar Industry Urged to Embrace Ethanol, CNG, and Green Hydrogen for Diversification
Key Ideas
  • Road, Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari encouraged diversification in the Indian sugar industry towards ethanol-diesel blending and green hydrogen production.
  • Automakers like Tatas, Suzuki, and Toyota are gearing up to launch flex engine fuel cars, while tractor manufacturers are urged to consider alternative fuels.
  • There are discussions on exporting ethanol to neighboring countries and exploring bio-bitumen and green hydrogen production using sugar industry infrastructure.
  • The government is considering industry requests for sugar exports and minimum selling price, aiming to enhance sector viability and support farmers' interests.
During the annual general meeting of the Indian Sugar and Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA), Minister Nitin Gadkari stressed the importance of diversification in the sugar industry. He highlighted the potential of ethanol-diesel blending, green hydrogen production, and the need for setting up ethanol and CNG pumps. The minister also mentioned the upcoming launch of flex engine fuel cars by automakers and encouraged tractor manufacturers to explore alternative fuel options. Exporting ethanol to neighboring countries like Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, as well as producing bio-bitumen and green hydrogen from sugar industry infrastructure, were discussed as potential growth areas. Gadkari emphasized the role of green hydrogen as an alternative fuel source and suggested leveraging existing infrastructure for its production. He also underscored the significance of increasing sugarcane productivity through modern techniques and supported industry requests for sugar exports and minimum selling price. These initiatives aim to enhance sector viability, increase productivity, and profitability while safeguarding the interests of consumers and farmers.
