India's Ambitious Green Hydrogen Mission: 3,000 MW Electrolyser Manufacturing Boost
Key Ideas
  • India is funding 3,000 MW of electrolyser manufacturing capacity to enhance green hydrogen production under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
  • Contracts have been awarded for 412,000 tons of green hydrogen production, aligning with the mission's goal of attracting investments and reducing emissions.
  • The mission aims for 5 MMT annual green hydrogen production, 125 GW renewable energy capacity addition, and creation of over six lakh jobs.
  • The Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition Programme (SIGHT) includes financial incentives for domestic manufacturing of electrolysers and green hydrogen production.
India is making significant strides towards boosting green hydrogen production with the announcement of funding for 3,000 MW of electrolyser manufacturing capacity. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, initiated with an outlay of Rs 19,744 crore, targets the development of 5 MMT of green hydrogen production annually and the addition of 125 GW of renewable energy capacity. Contracts have already been awarded for 412,000 tons of green hydrogen production, reinforcing the mission's objectives of attracting investments and reducing emissions. The Mission also aims to attract substantial investments totaling over Rs 8 lakh crore and create more than six lakh jobs. Additionally, it targets a cumulative reduction in fossil fuel imports of over Rs 1 lakh crore and the abatement of nearly 50 MMT of annual greenhouse gas emissions. By promoting demand creation, production, utilization, and export of green hydrogen, the Mission is driving the transition towards a more sustainable energy landscape. Under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition Programme (SIGHT), the Mission is providing financial incentives for domestic manufacturing of electrolysers and green hydrogen production. It also plans to support pilot projects in emerging end-use sectors and production pathways. Furthermore, the Mission will identify and develop regions capable of supporting large-scale hydrogen production and utilization as Green Hydrogen Hubs. In alignment with the Prime Minister's commitment at COP26, India aims to achieve 500 GW of installed electricity capacity from non-fossil sources by 2030. As of October 31, 2024, the country has already installed 211.40 GW of non-fossil power capacity. This concerted effort signifies India's proactive approach towards sustainable energy development and reducing carbon emissions.
