India is on the brink of a revolutionary transformation in rail transport with the imminent launch of its first hydrogen-powered train. The groundbreaking initiative, spearheaded by the Research, Design, and Standard Organisation (RDSO), is all set to undergo trial runs between Jind and Sonipat stations in Haryana. This endeavor signifies India's alignment with a select group of nations exploring hydrogen as a sustainable energy source for railways. The hydrogen train project, a first-of-its-kind on a large scale globally, is expected to conclude its final trials in the first quarter of the upcoming year. The meticulously designed train by RDSO incorporates modern utility and innovation, aiming to meet global standards. With a capacity to carry 2,638 passengers per trip, the hydrogen-powered train consists of eight passenger coaches along with additional coaches for storing hydrogen cylinders and housing essential components like fuel cell converters and batteries. The train, designed for short-distance routes with a maximum speed of 110 km/h, is currently being integrated at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai. While countries like Germany and China have delved into hydrogen rail transport, India's initiative stands out due to its scale and commitment to green energy.
