The Economic Survey of India has underscored the significance of advancing cleaner coal technologies, particularly focusing on gasification and coal-to-hydrogen processes, as part of efforts to reduce emissions and bolster energy security. While emphasizing the importance of integrating renewables in the long term, the survey highlighted the immediate need to embrace clean coal technologies to enhance efficiency and decrease environmental impact. The survey specifically mentioned the introduction of ultra super-critical technologies for coal-fired power plants as a means to achieve these objectives. The National Coal Gasification Mission, aimed at gasifying and liquefying 100 million tonnes of coal by 2030, along with partnerships between Coal India Ltd, BHEL, GAIL, and IOCL for coal gasification projects, were cited as crucial initiatives. Moreover, to incentivize coal gasification, the government has introduced a policy offering a 50% rebate in revenue share for coal used in gasification and established a separate auction window to cater to new coal gasification plants. The holistic approach outlined in the Economic Survey reflects a positive outlook towards leveraging cleaner coal technologies to drive sustainable development in India's energy sector.
