India's Minister for Petroleum & Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, announced at the India Bio-Energy & Tech Expo 2024 in New Delhi that India's ethanol blending percentage has surged from 1.53% in 2014 to 15% in 2024, with a target of 20% by 2025. The Ethanol Blending Program (EBP) has proven successful, saving Rs. 99,014 crore in foreign exchange, reducing CO2 emissions, and substituting crude oil. The government has disbursed significant sums to distillers and farmers, promoting economic growth. Puri emphasized the critical role of bioenergy in transforming India's energy sector and reducing import dependence. Several initiatives like E20 and E100 fuels have been launched, supported by incentives for ethanol production diversification. The government's policies have reduced arrears for sugarcane farmers and boosted ethanol production from various sources. Puri praised the automobile industry's efforts to develop vehicles compatible with ethanol blends and retrofit kits for older models. The Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA) aims to accelerate biofuel adoption globally. India is committed to advancing bioenergy, promoting sustainability, and leading in renewable energy practices.
