In a significant development, India is on the brink of inaugurating its first methanol production plant in Mancherial district, Telangana. Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) is spearheading this pioneering project near its Thermal Power Station in Pegadapalli. The plant's construction, nearly completed, is gearing up to convert 500 kg of captured carbon dioxide into 180 kg of methanol every day. This innovative approach utilizes carbon capture technology to transform harmful emissions into a valuable industrial chemical. Through a collaboration involving SCCL, Breath Applied Sciences Pvt Ltd, and Jawaharlal Nehru Center for Advanced Scientific Research, and funded by Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Limited (CMPDIL), the initiative is poised to redefine sustainable industrial practices in India. Methanol, a versatile compound crucial for various industries, is predominantly imported due to domestic demand exceeding production capacity. SCCL's endeavor holds the potential to reduce this import reliance, offering financial benefits to both the company and the country. With the aim of contributing to India's energy transition and bolstering industrial sustainability, Coal India plans to expand methanol production if the initial phase proves successful. This venture not only promises to lower carbon footprints but also to establish India as a frontrunner in sustainable industrial development.
