India's Green Hydrogen Industry Receives Boost with SIGHT Scheme
Key Ideas
  • Fourteen companies, including Reliance Green Hydrogen, submitted bids under India's SIGHT Scheme to produce 4,50,000 tonnes of green hydrogen, offering potential benefits of Rs 5,400 crore.
  • The scheme provides graded financial incentives to promote domestic manufacturing, starting at Rs 50 per kg in the first year and decreasing to Rs 30 by the third year.
  • SECI received bids exceeding available capacities, indicating strong industry interest in India's National Green Hydrogen Mission, aiming for 5 MMT annual capacity and 125 GW of renewable energy infrastructure.
  • The mission will support the development of new production methods and the establishment of green hydrogen hubs to drive India's green energy transition.
In a strategic move to boost India's green hydrogen industry, fourteen companies, including Reliance Green Hydrogen, have submitted technical bids under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Scheme's second tranche. The initiative aims to produce 4,50,000 tonnes of green hydrogen with the potential benefits reaching Rs 5,400 crore. Through the scheme, the government offers graded financial incentives, starting at Rs 50 per kg in the first year and reducing to Rs 30 by the third year, to encourage domestic manufacturing and production. The robust industry interest was evident as SECI received commitments that surpassed available capacities. India's National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in January 2023 with a financial backing of Rs 19,744 crore, has set ambitious goals of developing 5 MMT of annual green hydrogen capacity and adding 125 GW of renewable energy infrastructure. This mission will not only focus on scaling up production but also on fostering new production methods and identifying potential green hydrogen hubs to support the country's transition towards cleaner and sustainable energy sources.
