India's Green Hydrogen Mission is set to make the country a significant player in the green hydrogen sector, targeting an annual production of 5 million tonnes by 2030. Minister Hardeep Singh Puri highlighted the potential of green hydrogen in reducing fossil fuel imports by Rs1 lakh crore. State-owned companies like IOCL and GAIL are actively involved in increasing green hydrogen production, with plans to scale up to 165 KTPA. Additionally, GAIL has already established a hydrogen plant in Madhya Pradesh using PEM Electrolyze technology. Notable initiatives include a partnership between Cochin International Airport Limited and Bharat Petroleum to develop a green hydrogen plant. The government's support extends to incentives like a 25-year waiver of transmission charges and an initial allocation of Rs19,744 crore for the National Green Hydrogen Mission. This mission is expected to attract investments exceeding Rs8 lakh crore and create over 6 lakh jobs. The promotion of green hydrogen in city gas distribution systems and the development of policies by states like Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh further underscore India's commitment to green energy. With abundant natural resources, low-cost solar energy, and a robust infrastructure, India is poised to achieve energy independence and drive sustainable growth in the green hydrogen sector.
