India's Green Steel Initiative: Consortium Formation and Carbon Reduction Roadmap
Key Ideas
  • A consortium involving labs, IITs, and steel industry players is being formed to develop indigenous green technology for steelmaking in India.
  • The Steel Ministry has issued tenders under the National Green Hydrogen Mission with a Rs 455 crore outlay to support projects towards green steel production.
  • Efforts include piloting the country's first green steel making initiative using 100% hydrogen-based Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) production method.
  • India is working on a decarbonization roadmap to cut the steel sector's carbon footprint, focusing on increased hydrogen use and carbon capture technologies.
In India, steps have been taken towards the formation of a consortium involving laboratories, Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), steelmakers, and equipment manufacturers to develop indigenous green technology for steelmaking. The initiative aims to establish a group for developing homegrown technology for green steel production. The Steel Ministry has already initiated tenders under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, allocating a budget of Rs 455 crore to invite industry participation and provide partial funding support. The proposed consortium, spearheaded by the Institute of Minerals and Management Technology, plans to pilot India's first green steel production using a 100% hydrogen-based Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) production method. The government is actively involved in negotiations with technology provider Danieli to reduce the cost of a 0.5 million tonne hydrogen-based DRI plant to make it more economical for steel companies. Furthermore, a decarbonization roadmap is in progress to reduce the steel sector's carbon emissions, where strategies like increased hydrogen utilization and carbon capture technologies will be employed. India's goal is to decrease the carbon intensity in steel production by approximately 20% from the current 2.5 tonnes of carbon per steel, showcasing a positive stance towards sustainability and green technology adoption in the steel industry.
