The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways in India has launched the Sustainable Green Tug Transition Program (GTTP) to shift from conventional fuel-based harbour tugs to eco-friendly alternatives. This initiative, part of the 'Panch Karma Sankalp', aims to decarbonize maritime operations by replacing existing diesel-powered tugs with zero-emission alternatives. Phase 1 of the GTTP, starting in October 2024, will see the procurement or charter of green tugs by four Major Ports in India. These tugs, with an investment of INR 1000 Crores, will initially be battery-electric but can evolve to incorporate hybrid, methanol, and green hydrogen technologies. The program is a significant step towards realizing a sustainable and green maritime sector in India, aligning with the country's 'Make in India' initiative by fostering domestic innovation and manufacturing in the maritime industry. By 2040, the goal is to have all tugs in Indian Major Ports transitioned to green tugs, establishing a standardized eco-friendly fleet throughout the country. The GTTP not only supports environmental goals but also contributes to creating employment opportunities in shipbuilding and strengthening the country's commitment to sustainability. This initiative is in line with India's Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, which set ambitious targets for enhancing the maritime sector's sustainability and reducing carbon emissions. The program reflects the government's dedication to fostering sustainability and innovation in India's ports and maritime operations, paving the way for a cleaner and greener future.
