India's National Green Hydrogen Mission: Pioneering Sustainable Transport Solutions
Key Ideas
  • Five pilot projects initiated under the National Green Hydrogen Mission in India to deploy 37 hydrogen-powered vehicles and establish nine refueling stations across the country.
  • Leading companies like TATA Motors, Reliance Industries, and NTPC awarded projects with Rs. 208 Crore financial support from the government.
  • Projects aim to test viability of hydrogen as a transport fuel and promote its larger-scale adoption, aligning with India's commitment to clean energy transition and self-reliant India.
  • Initiatives are set to be operational within the next 18-24 months to advance India's efforts towards sustainable and green transportation solutions.
India has launched five pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, sanctioned by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, to introduce hydrogen-powered vehicles and refueling infrastructure across the country. These projects will deploy a total of 37 vehicles, including fuel-cell-based and internal combustion engine-based vehicles, along with establishing nine hydrogen refueling stations along 10 routes. Companies like TATA Motors, Reliance Industries, and NTPC have been chosen to lead these projects, supported by a total financial backing of Rs. 208 Crore from the Indian government. The main objective of these initiatives is to assess the technical and economic feasibility of hydrogen as a transport fuel and to lay the groundwork for broader adoption in the future. This move is in line with India's vision for Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) and its commitment to clean energy. The projects are expected to be operational within the next 18-24 months, marking a significant step towards achieving sustainable and green transportation solutions as part of India's clean energy transition.
