India, heavily dependent on oil and coal imports, aims to achieve energy independence by 2047 under the Viksit Bharat (VB) vision. The plan involves a significant shift towards green technologies, including the installation of over 500 GW of non-fossil electricity generation capacity by 2030 and a target of 90% green grid by 2047. This transition includes promoting electric vehicles and green hydrogen for heavy industrial production to reduce CO2 emissions and air pollution-related deaths significantly. Despite the need for substantial capital investment, estimated at ₹11-15 million crores between 2023 and 2047, the transition is expected to bring economic benefits, such as net consumer savings of $2.5 trillion by 2047 and a 95% reduction in industrial coal imports, enhancing India's energy security. The VB policy framework focuses on green technology deployment, financial support for emerging technologies, infrastructure planning, domestic manufacturing scaling, and ensuring a fair transition, highlighting the importance of collaboration for sustainable development.
