During the BNEF Summit, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari expressed his belief that the Indian electric vehicle market no longer requires government subsidies to thrive. He emphasized how the reduction in manufacturing costs for EVs, driven by increasing demand, has made subsidies unnecessary. Gadkari highlighted the tax advantages already present for EVs in India, with a GST rate of 5% compared to 28% for petrol and diesel vehicles. He underlined the country's progress towards cleaner energy and his commitment to promoting alternative fuels like CNG, LNG, methanol, green hydrogen, and ethanol. The minister particularly focused on the role of electric buses in reducing pollution levels and fossil fuel dependence, with plans for inter-city electric buses and charging infrastructure on highways. Gadkari projected that EVs would reach price parity with internal combustion engine vehicles within two years, driven by decreasing lithium-ion battery costs. He also discussed India's potential to become a leading exporter of lithium-ion batteries and attract automobile manufacturers due to low production costs. Despite slow EV adoption rates in India, Gadkari remains optimistic about the growth of the electric vehicle market and the overall automotive industry's shift towards sustainability.
