India's Strategic Move to Boost Green Hydrogen Production
Key Ideas
  • The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy in India has exempted renewable energy plants within SEZs or EOUs from ALMM requirements to promote green hydrogen production.
  • This exemption aims to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy infrastructure exclusively for green hydrogen production, aligning with India's clean energy objectives.
  • The adjustment in ALMM regulations allows projects focused on green hydrogen to proceed without delays, supporting the country's commitment to reducing carbon emissions.
  • The exemption, applicable until December 31, 2030, is projected to enhance the production capacities of green hydrogen plants and facilitate cost-effective sourcing of power.
The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy in India has taken a significant step to boost green hydrogen production by issuing a directive that exempts renewable energy plants located within special economic zones (SEZs) or export-oriented units (EOUs) from the approved list of models and manufacturers (ALMM) requirements. The aim is to promote the rapid development of renewable energy infrastructure dedicated to green hydrogen production. This move, approved by the Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy R. K. Singh, is aligned with India's green hydrogen initiatives and clean energy goals. The exemption from ALMM regulations ensures that projects committed to green hydrogen production can progress without the usual regulatory delays associated with module approval. This exemption is set to benefit all relevant renewable energy projects commissioned by December 31, 2030. By allowing flexible and cost-effective power sourcing, the exemption is expected to significantly enhance the production capacity of green hydrogen plants, furthering India's efforts in clean energy and reducing carbon emissions.
