India is making significant strides in transitioning to renewable energy sources, with a goal of achieving complete reliance on clean energy by 2070. However, the country's heavy dependency on coal, which currently stands at 70%, presents a major obstacle to this transition. To address this challenge, there have been initiatives to repurpose decommissioned coal mines for sustainable projects such as solar installations and pisciculture. The Ministry of Coal has put forward a framework for the repurposing of coal mines, focusing on remediation and restoring livelihoods. Various regions in India, like Telangana and Jharkhand, have already implemented projects like solar power plants and pisciculture in abandoned coal mines. Efficient land use is a key aspect of this transition, with regions like Chhattisgarh's Korba district exploring ways to reclaim land from coal mines for a greener economy and towards achieving net-zero emissions. However, a comprehensive framework encompassing government policies and financial incentives is deemed necessary for a smooth transition. The Ministry of Coal highlights the potential for producing over one million metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually by using just 10% of mined land for green hydrogen projects. Additionally, initiatives by Coal India Limited, like transforming disused mines into ecological parks, serve as examples of promoting eco-tourism and creating carbon sinks. Overall, the repurposing of coal mines in India is seen as a positive step towards sustainable energy solutions and achieving the goal of net-zero emissions. The need for government support, policy frameworks, and innovative ideas like pump hydro storage are vital for a successful transition.
