The Ministry of Coal in India has initiated the country's first pilot project for Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) in Jharkhand, specifically in the Kasta coal block in Jamtara District. This project aims to revolutionize the coal industry by utilizing in-situ coal gasification to transform coal directly within the earth into valuable gases such as methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. These gases can be utilized for various industrial applications, enhancing efficiency and reducing environmental impact. The project, conducted by Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) in partnership with Canadian company Ergo Exergy Technologies Inc. (EETI), is funded by the CIL R&D Board and spans two years, divided into two phases. The first phase focuses on generating a Technical Feasibility Report through borehole drilling and core testing, while the second phase will concentrate on coal gasification at a pilot scale. This innovative initiative underscores the Ministry's proactive approach towards diversification and exploration of advanced technologies in the coal sector. By leveraging cutting-edge coal gasification methods, India aims to tap into coal resources that were previously economically unfeasible to access through conventional mining techniques.
