Danish shipping and logistics giant Maersk celebrated a significant moment by officially naming its latest methanol dual-fuel container vessel, Albert Maersk, in Mumbai, India on February 28. This event marked the first-ever vessel naming ceremony by a foreign shipping company in India and symbolized Maersk's commitment to sustainable shipping practices. The 16,592 TEU vessel, part of Maersk's ambitious fleet expansion, is one of 18 large dual-fuel methanol vessels set for delivery between 2024 and 2025. The naming ceremony was attended by India's Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, who emphasized India's potential as a key producer and supplier of green methanol, ammonia, and hydrogen-based fuels, welcoming Maersk's involvement in the country's green fuel production and sustainable maritime initiatives. Maersk's CEO highlighted the importance of the vessel in the company's decarbonization journey and announced a significant $5 billion investment pipeline for developing ports, terminals, and infrastructure in India. Maersk's proactive steps include urging the IMO for supportive regulations and ordering 20 dual-fuel container vessels to accelerate the transition to greener fuels, positioning the company at the forefront of the industry's shift towards sustainability.
