The National Highways for Electric Vehicles (NHEV) has commenced its 3rd Tech Trial Run in Tamil Nadu, specifically focusing on upgrading highways into e-highways. This trial covers a 332 km route from Chennai to Trichy and includes the deployment of electric, hydrogen, and zero-emission trucks. Led by NHEV, the initiative seeks to provide stakeholders with insights on the benefits and costs of transitioning to greener vehicles. Dr. P. Alarmelmangai, IAS, along with Tamil Nadu government officials and industry partners, flagged off the trial at the Chennai Trade Centre. The program director, Abhijit Sinha, highlighted the trial's emphasis on freight and logistics, aiming to integrate various eco-friendly vehicles on a 5500 km e-highway network. The project also focuses on determining optimal charging station locations and reducing India's logistics costs by decarbonizing the trucking industry. Through this trial, stakeholders will evaluate the cost-effectiveness of electric and hydrogen vehicles, total ownership costs, and the investment required for e-highway infrastructure upgrades. Tamil Nadu, known for its significance in the logistics and automotive sectors, was selected for the trial due to its strategic importance in India's economy. The trial is anticipated to offer valuable insights for the future of sustainable transportation, aligning with India's efforts towards zero-emission transportation for a greener future.
