NTPC and Indian Army Collaborate on Solar Hydrogen Microgrid in Ladakh
Key Ideas
  • NTPC partners with the Indian Army to establish a Solar Hydrogen-based Microgrid in Ladakh, ensuring a stable power supply using Green Hydrogen.
  • The project aims to replace diesel gen-sets at off-grid Army locations, providing sustainable power supply even in harsh winter conditions with temperatures dropping to -30°C.
  • The Solar Hydrogen system, designed to operate independently, will supply 200kW of power round-the-clock throughout the year, enhancing self-sufficiency in remote areas affected by road connectivity disruptions.
  • NTPC's initiatives also include a trial run of a hydrogen bus in Leh and plans for a hydrogen fuelling station, a solar plant, and five fuel cell buses for intracity routes in Leh, contributing to renewable energy targets and carbon neutrality in Ladakh.
NTPC and the Indian Army have joined forces to establish a Solar Hydrogen-based Microgrid in Ladakh, aimed at providing a stable power supply using Green Hydrogen in off-grid Army locations. The Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, inaugurated the project through a video conference. This innovative system, designed to operate independently, will utilize hydrogen as an energy storage medium, supplying 200kW of power round-the-clock throughout the year. By replacing diesel gen-sets, the project ensures sustainable power supply in extreme winter conditions, maintaining operations even at -30°C and 4,400 meters altitude for the next 25 years. The project leverages Ladakh's high solar irradiance and low temperatures to promote green energy production and reduce reliance on fuel logistics, enhancing self-sufficiency in remote areas. Alongside this, NTPC has initiated a trial run of a hydrogen bus in Leh, signaling progress towards renewable energy goals and carbon neutrality. The company plans to establish a hydrogen fuelling station, a solar plant, and operate five fuel cell buses on intracity routes in Leh. These initiatives showcase NTPC's commitment to sustainable energy solutions and environmental conservation in Ladakh.
