NTPC, India's largest power utility, has partnered with the Indian Army to launch a Solar Hydrogen-based Microgrid in Ladakh, specifically at Chushul. The microgrid, designed to provide a stable power supply in off-grid Army locations, will utilize green hydrogen as an energy storage medium, replacing diesel generators. This innovative system, capable of delivering 200 kW of power year-round, integrates renewable energy sources with hydrogen energy storage, offering a reliable energy solution in challenging terrains. The collaboration also includes a trial run of hydrogen buses in Leh, where NTPC has set up a hydrogen fuelling station and a solar plant. The initiative not only aims to reduce reliance on traditional fuels but also enhance self-sufficiency in regions facing logistical challenges. With Ladakh's favorable geographic features for green energy production, the project is set to usher in a new era of decarbonisation in the defence sector, addressing both energy needs and environmental concerns. Furthermore, NTPC's broader commitment to clean energy is evident through their ambitious goals of achieving 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032 and implementing various decarbonisation initiatives.
