NTPC, in collaboration with the Indian Army, is embarking on a pioneering project to construct a Solar Hydrogen-based Microgrid in Chushul, Ladakh. This innovative system will leverage hydrogen as an energy storage medium to supply a continuous power output of 200kW throughout the year, effectively replacing diesel generators currently in use at off-grid Army locations. The Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the project remotely, highlighting its significance in providing a stable power supply using Green Hydrogen in regions like Ladakh, known for extreme weather conditions. The solar-hydrogen microgrid is designed to tackle the challenges posed by harsh winter conditions in Ladakh, where temperatures can plummet to -30°C at an altitude of 4,400 meters. By incorporating renewable energy sources and the energy storage capability of hydrogen, the microgrid ensures a reliable and sustainable power supply, reducing carbon emissions and promoting a cleaner energy ecosystem. NTPC's long-term commitment to maintaining the project for 25 years underscores its dedication to supporting Indian soldiers stationed in remote and challenging terrains. Moreover, the project aligns with NTPC's broader goals of achieving renewable energy targets, decarbonisation, and fostering green hydrogen technology. In addition to the microgrid project, NTPC is also venturing into hydrogen fuel technology by conducting a trial run of a hydrogen bus in Leh and setting up a hydrogen fuelling station and solar plant in Leh for intracity transportation.
