Odisha's Green Hydrogen Mobility Project: Driving Towards Sustainable Transport
Key Ideas
  • A tripartite agreement was signed in Odisha to launch a green hydrogen mobility project, involving CRUT, NTPC, and GRIDCO.
  • The project aims to introduce hydrogen-powered buses to replace diesel ones, reduce carbon emissions, and enhance public transport.
  • NTPC will establish a hydrogen production facility at CRUT depot, with GRIDCO supplying renewable energy for the initiative.
  • This project aligns with the National Green Hydrogen Mission and has received investments for the pilot phase to promote sustainable transport.
In Bhubaneswar, Odisha, a significant step was taken towards launching a green hydrogen mobility project with the signing of a tripartite agreement involving CRUT, NTPC, and GRIDCO. The agreement, spanning five years, outlines the roles of each entity, with CRUT maintaining hydrogen-powered buses, NTPC overseeing hydrogen production, and GRIDCO ensuring the supply of renewable energy. This initiative, supported by the Odisha government and key officials, is seen as a pivotal step in addressing climate change in the state. The project targets the replacement of diesel buses with hydrogen-powered ones to reduce carbon emissions and improve public transport. Initially, three hydrogen-powered buses will be deployed by NTPC, each offering a mileage of 12 km per kilogram of fuel and designed to cover 600 km on a full tank of 58 kg of hydrogen. To support this, NTPC will establish a hydrogen production facility at the CRUT depot in Bhubaneswar, utilizing existing infrastructure. GRIDCO will supply 2 MW of electricity from a nearby substation to power the facility. The project, in line with the National Green Hydrogen Mission guidelines, has received investments from the Automotive Research Association of India for its pilot phase. This initiative marks a positive advancement towards sustainable transport and environmental conservation.
