Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) in India has unveiled an ambitious blueprint to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2038, backed by a substantial investment of approximately Rs 2 lakh crore. In a comprehensive 200-page strategy document, ONGC has laid out its roadmap, which includes a significant focus on renewable energy projects and green hydrogen initiatives. By 2030, ONGC aims to invest Rs 97,000 crore in establishing 5 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity, encompassing various sources like solar parks, wind turbines, biogas projects, pump storage plants, and offshore wind installations. Furthermore, the company plans to allocate Rs 65,500 crore by 2035 towards green hydrogen and green ammonia facilities, while an additional Rs 38,000 crore will be directed to setting up 1 GW of offshore wind projects by 2038. ONGC's strategy also includes measures to address environmental concerns, such as the complete elimination of gas flaring by 2030 through a Rs 5,000 crore investment in innovative technologies. The company aims to reduce its methane emissions significantly, which stood at 554 million cubic meters in the base year of 2021-22. The renewable energy initiatives encompass investments in solar parks, onshore wind farms, and future capacities slated for installation in the coming years. Overall, ONGC's plan reflects a positive shift towards sustainability and clean energy, showcasing its commitment to reducing carbon footprint and embracing green technologies.
