The Ministry of Steel in India has taken significant steps towards decarbonisation and promoting environmental sustainability within the steel industry. By constituting 14 Task Forces, the ministry aims to discuss and recommend strategies for decarbonisation. Under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the Ministry of Steel has initiated two pilot projects to produce DRI using 100% hydrogen and another pilot project to incorporate hydrogen in Blast Furnace operations to reduce coal consumption. The ministry has not mandated the procurement of green steel by government agencies yet but has introduced policies to support the transition towards greener production technologies. This includes the release of Taxonomy for Green Steel, setting standards and creating a market for low emission steel. Additionally, policies like the Steel Scrap Recycling Policy and the Vehicles Scrapping Facility Rules have been implemented to increase the availability of scrap and reduce coal usage in steel production. The National Solar Mission, launched in 2010 by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, further contributes to reducing emissions in the steel industry by promoting the use of solar energy. These initiatives showcase the commitment of the Ministry of Steel towards environmental sustainability and transitioning to greener production methods.
