Residents of Korattur East Avenue Road in Chennai have endured issues like stench, pollution of hydrogen sulphide, and corrosion of household appliances due to toxic emissions for a long time. The sewage pumping station in the area, with a capacity of 36 million litres per day, is set to undergo a 5-crore renovation that includes an odour-control mechanism and automation system. This upgrade, inspired by the successful facility in Venus Nagar, Kolathur, is expected to significantly improve air quality and living conditions in the locality. The proposed 5 crore project involves a radial fan that will suck in hydrogen sulphide gas and direct it into a chamber with activated carbon filters, which will trap sulphur compounds, neutralize the odour, and release clean water vapor. By integrating IoT technology, the system will be fully automated, allowing engineers to monitor and control it remotely through a mobile app. This advancement ensures that workers are not exposed to the poisonous gas, enhancing safety measures at the pumping station. Metrowater, the governing body, is currently evaluating tenders for the project and plans to implement the upgrade post the northeast monsoon. The pumping station, which has 11 wells and receives sewage from 18 other pumping stations, plays a crucial role in managing wastewater in the area. Approximately 15 MLD of sewage is sent to the Kodungaiyur treatment plant, while the remaining quantity is directed to the Koyambedu plant. Once completed, this modernization initiative will not only address pollution issues but also contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment for the residents of Korattur East Avenue Road.
