Revolutionizing Steel Production: India's First Green Steel Facility Launched
Key Ideas
  • Gensol and Matrix Gas partner to establish India's first Green Steel production facility using 100% Green Hydrogen, supported by government incentives.
  • The project, part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, aims to reduce carbon emissions in the steel sector through innovative DRI technology.
  • The consortium includes key stakeholders like Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar and Metsol AB, emphasizing green hydrogen and sustainable practices.
  • Matrix Gas & Renewables will oversee the project lifecycle, from land acquisition to commissioning, aligning with India's renewable energy goals.
Gensol Engineering Limited and Matrix Gas & Renewables have joined forces to launch India's first and largest Green Steel production facility, marking a significant milestone in the country's sustainable development journey. The facility, supported by the National Green Hydrogen Mission, will leverage 100% Green Hydrogen for its operations, signaling a shift towards eco-friendly steel production methods. With a total capital expenditure of INR 321 Crore and half of it being funded by the Government of India as incentives, the project aims to revolutionize the steel sector by reducing carbon emissions through the utilization of innovative Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) vertical shaft technology. This groundbreaking approach replaces traditional fossil fuel-dependent methods with green hydrogen derived from renewable sources, thus eliminating CO₂ emissions in the steel production process. The pilot plant, with a capacity of 50 tons per day, is just the beginning, as plans for additional Green Steel facilities in various regions are already in motion. The involvement of key players like the Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar and Metsol AB from Sweden in the consortium underscores the commitment to sustainable practices and green hydrogen. Matrix Gas & Renewables will take charge of the project's end-to-end management, emphasizing not just on production but also on environmental considerations and infrastructure development. Chirag Kotecha, the Whole-time Director of Matrix Gas and Renewables, expressed the project's alignment with India's renewable energy objectives, showcasing a pivotal step towards a greener and more sustainable industrial landscape.
