Tata Steel and Welspun Corp Achieve Milestone in Green Hydrogen Infrastructure Development
Key Ideas
- Tata Steel and Welspun Corp successfully develop Hydrogen-compliant API X65 grade pipes for transporting 100% pure gaseous hydrogen under high pressure, aligning with India's green hydrogen policy.
- Tata Steel becomes the first Indian steel mill to produce hot-rolled steel for hydrogen transportation, while Welspun Corp is the first Indian pipe mill to produce ERW pipes for this purpose.
- The strategic partnership between Tata Steel and Welspun Corp aims to promote green hydrogen usage and contribute to a net-zero economy by 2070, emphasizing sustainability and innovation.
- Tata Steel's other initiatives include implementing COG Injection Technology, trials of hydrogen and CBM injection, carbon capture and utilisation projects, efforts to reduce freshwater consumption, and embrace circular economy principles.
Tata Steel and Welspun Corp have achieved a significant milestone in the development of green hydrogen infrastructure by successfully producing Hydrogen-compliant API X65 grade pipes in India. These pipes have surpassed critical sour service and fracture qualification tests, enabling the safe transportation of 100% pure gaseous hydrogen under high pressure at RINA, Italy. This accomplishment marks Tata Steel as the first Indian steel mill to supply hot-rolled steel for hydrogen transportation and Welspun Corp as the first Indian pipe mill to manufacture ERW pipes for this purpose. The collaboration between the two companies, initiated through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in 2022, aims to support India's green hydrogen policy and facilitate the transition to a greener, more sustainable future. Additionally, Tata Steel has engaged in various other eco-friendly initiatives, including implementing COG Injection Technology, conducting trials of hydrogen and CBM injection, operating carbon capture and utilisation projects, reducing freshwater consumption, and embracing circular economy principles.
