Key Ideas
- Tata Steel and Welspun Corp collaborate to produce hydrogen-compliant grade steel pipes for gaseous hydrogen transportation, passing critical tests at RINA in Italy.
- The development of API X65 grade pipes signifies a milestone in clean energy solutions and supports the transition to green hydrogen in India.
- This initiative aligns with the Indian government's goal of achieving a net-zero economy by 2070, emphasizing the importance of green hydrogen usage for a sustainable future.
Tata Steel and Welspun Corp have announced the launch of hydrogen-compliant grade steel pipes designed for the transportation of gaseous hydrogen. The collaboration resulted in the development of API X65 grade pipes that successfully passed critical tests for transporting pure gaseous hydrogen under high pressure. This achievement positions Tata Steel and Welspun Corp as pioneering Indian companies manufacturing electric resistance welded (ERW) pipes for hydrogen transportation. The companies' partnership, initiated through a 2022 MOU, saw Tata Steel supplying hot-rolled coils from its Kalinganagar plant while Welspun Corp handled the manufacturing of the ERW pipes. Prabhat Kumar from Tata Steel highlighted the project's significance in boosting clean energy infrastructure and transitioning to green hydrogen. Vipul Mathur, Managing Director and CEO of Welspun Corp, emphasized the initiative's alignment with the Indian government's vision for a net-zero economy by 2070, promoting green hydrogen usage and contributing to a more sustainable future.
