Tata Steel's Breakthrough: Approved Steel Pipes for Gaseous Hydrogen Transportation
Key Ideas
  • Tata Steel's API X65 ERW pipes have been certified by RINA-CSM for transporting pure gaseous hydrogen at 100 bar pressure.
  • The steel pipes, processed at Tata's Khopoli plant, successfully address hydrogen embrittlement challenges, crucial for hydrogen transportation infrastructure.
  • Tata Steel aims to support India's National Green Hydrogen Mission by showcasing its end-to-end capabilities in developing steel pipes for hydrogen transportation.
  • This development highlights Tata Steel's commitment to innovation and sustainability in the steel industry, positioning them as a pioneer in hydrogen infrastructure.
Tata Steel has achieved a significant milestone with the approval of its steel pipes for transporting pure gaseous hydrogen at high pressure. The API X65 ERW pipes, certified by the Italian testing organization RINA-CSM, are considered viable for hydrogen infrastructure. Despite the cost-effectiveness of pipelines for long-distance hydrogen transportation, hydrogen embrittlement poses a significant challenge due to hydrogen atoms weakening steel structures. Tata Steel's pipes, manufactured at its Khopoli plant using steel from Kalingangar, have successfully met all critical properties necessary for safe hydrogen transportation. This approval positions Tata Steel as the first Indian steel firm with the capabilities to develop steel pipes for hydrogen transportation, aligning with India's ambitious National Green Hydrogen Mission to produce five million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030. The Vice-President of Marketing & Sales at Tata Steel, Prabhat Kumar, emphasized the positive impact of this development on India's green energy goals. This breakthrough not only showcases Tata Steel's technological prowess and manufacturing excellence but also underscores their commitment to fostering innovation in the steel industry for a sustainable future.
