Union Government Sanctions Three Hydrogen Pilot Projects for Steel Production in India
Key Ideas
  • The Union Government in India has approved three pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission for utilizing hydrogen in steel production.
  • These projects aim to showcase the feasibility and viability of green hydrogen-based steelmaking processes, contributing to low-carbon iron and steel production.
  • Companies like Matrix Gas and Renewables Ltd, Simplex Castings Ltd, and Steel Authority of India Ltd have been selected to implement these pilot projects with substantial financial support.
  • The successful implementation of these projects over the next three years could lead to the widespread adoption of hydrogen technologies in the steel sector in India.
The Union Government of India has recently sanctioned three pilot projects as part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission to explore the utilization of hydrogen in the steel production sector. These projects aim to identify and implement advanced technologies that leverage green hydrogen in steelmaking processes. By demonstrating the safe operations, technical feasibility, and economic viability of using green hydrogen in steel production, the projects are set to pave the way for low-carbon iron and steel manufacturing methods. The approved projects include producing Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) using 100% hydrogen, integrating hydrogen in blast furnaces to reduce coal/coke consumption, and injecting hydrogen in DRI making units. Companies like Matrix Gas and Renewables Ltd, Simplex Castings Ltd, and Steel Authority of India Ltd have been selected to execute these pilot projects, with significant financial backing from the Government of India amounting to Rs. 347 Crore. The successful completion of these projects over the next three years is expected to lead to the scaling up of hydrogen technologies in the steel sector, marking a significant step towards sustainable and eco-friendly steel production in India.
