Union Minister Flags-off Green Hydrogen Mobility Project in Leh
Key Ideas
  • Union Minister Manohar Lal flagged-off the green hydrogen buses at Leh, highlighting NTPC's contribution to energy security and decarbonisation efforts.
  • The Green Hydrogen Mobility Project includes a 1.7 MW solar plant, a hydrogen filling station, and 5 intra-city hydrogen buses at a high altitude of 3650m MSL.
  • The project will reduce carbon emissions by approximately 350 MT/year and contribute 230 MT/year of pure oxygen to the atmosphere, equal to planting 13000 trees.
  • Ladakh's high solar irradiance and low temperatures make it ideal for green hydrogen production, promoting self-sufficiency in energy without fossil fuel logistics.
The Ministry of Power recently witnessed the inauguration of the Green Hydrogen Mobility Project in Leh, marked by the Union Minister's flag-off of green hydrogen buses. NTPC, under the leadership of Union Minister Manohar Lal, received accolades for its role in enhancing India's energy security and decarbonisation through the adoption of hydrogen technologies. The project in Leh features a 1.7 MW solar plant, an 80 kg/day capacity green hydrogen filling station, and 5 hydrogen-powered intra-city buses, operating at a high altitude of 3650m MSL. Each bus can cover 300 km on a single 25 kg hydrogen fill, making it an efficient and eco-friendly mode of transport. The project aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions by around 350 MT/year while contributing 230 MT/year of pure oxygen to the atmosphere, equivalent to planting 13000 trees annually. The unique environmental and geographical conditions of Ladakh, including high solar irradiance and low temperatures, provide an ideal setting for efficient solar power generation and green hydrogen production. This initiative not only mitigates carbon footprints but also enables Ladakh to achieve energy self-sufficiency without relying on fossil fuel logistics. NTPC's commitment to green hydrogen projects extends beyond Leh, with plans for more projects nationwide and the establishment of a hydrogen hub in Andhra Pradesh. The initiative emphasizes the growing importance of green energy, sustainability, and renewable resources in India's energy landscape.
