The World Bank has approved USD 1.5 billion in financing to support India's low-carbon transition, focusing on developing green hydrogen and renewable energy sectors. India, known as the world's fastest-growing large economy, requires increased renewable energy adoption to curb emissions growth. The funding will play a crucial role in promoting the growth of a market for green hydrogen, scaling up renewable energy capacities, and facilitating finance for low-carbon energy investments. It is expected that these efforts will lead to the production of 450,000 metric tons of green hydrogen and 1,500 MW of electrolyzers annually, aiding in a significant 50 million-ton reduction in emissions per year. This initiative is strategically designed to complement India's low-carbon development strategy and assist in achieving the country's ambitious net-zero target. Furthermore, it aligns with the Government of India's energy security priorities and the World Bank's Hydrogen for Development Partnership. The operation also aims to bolster the establishment of a national carbon credit market. The financing package includes a substantial USD 1.46 billion loan from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and a USD 31.5 million credit from the International Development Association (IDA), showcasing strong international support for India's green energy revolution.
