Yara International, a Norwegian firm, recently opened a 24 MW renewable hydrogen plant in Herøya, Norway. The facility produces green hydrogen and ammonia, with the first tonnes of fertilizers made from clean ammonia already being delivered. Inaugurated by Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, the plant is claimed to be the largest of its kind in Europe and operates by electrolyzing water with renewable energy, replacing natural gas as feedstock. This process results in cutting approximately 41,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. Yara's President & CEO, Svein Tore Holsether, emphasized the significance of this milestone for decarbonization across various industries. The company's collaboration with Lantmännen to deliver low-carbon footprint fertilizers showcases the importance of partnerships in achieving decarbonization goals. Yara's new portfolio, 'Yara Climate Choice,' introduces sustainable fertilizers that will benefit crops and contribute to the decarbonization of the food value chain. Additionally, Yara aims to produce low-carbon ammonia with carbon capture storage (CCS) to further support the hydrogen economy and emerging markets for low-emission ammonia. The project also involves ITM Power's 'TRIDENT' PEM electrolyser stack platform and construction by Linde Engineering. Yara's commitment to sustainability is evident in its investments in Herøya Industrial Park, emphasizing the company's dedication to advancing renewable energy and decarbonization efforts.
