EET Fuels Progresses Towards Low Carbon Refinery with Hydrogen Fuel Switching Project
Key Ideas
  • EET Fuels in the UK advances to the FEED stage with Wood for their Hydrogen Fuel Switching project, aiming to create a low carbon process refinery.
  • The project involves utilizing hydrogen from EET Hydrogen for fuel switching in the refinery's core infrastructure, reducing emissions by 0.2 million tonnes per year.
  • Upon completion, the project will enable the refinery to run on 100% hydrogen, contributing to a 95% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030.
  • EET Fuels and Wood collaborate to drive decarbonization and energy transition in the UK, ensuring energy security and employment opportunities in industrial areas.
EET Fuels, a division of Essar Oil UK based in Stanlow, is moving forward with its ambitious plan to establish the world's leading low carbon process refinery. The company has reached the front-end engineering design (FEED) stage of its Hydrogen Fuel Switching project. This initiative involves incorporating hydrogen provided by EET Hydrogen, the company's hydrogen production arm, to enable fuel switching in the refinery's operations. Wood, a global consulting and engineering firm, has been appointed to oversee the final design of the fuel system and re-design the infrastructure and control systems for safe hydrogen combustion. The successful completion of the FEED phase will pave the way for EET Fuels to make the final investment decision (FID) on the hydrogen fuel switching project in the upcoming year. By utilizing hydrogen in assets like the hydrogen-ready crude distiller furnace, EET Fuels aims to significantly reduce emissions at the Stanlow Refinery, with an expected decrease of 0.2 million tonnes per year. Once the hydrogen supply from EET Hydrogen is established, it will facilitate fuel switching for all fired-heaters on site. This significant progress underscores the company's commitment to achieving a 95% reduction in CO2 emissions at the Stanlow Refinery by 2030. Deepak Maheshwari, CEO of EET Fuels, expressed confidence in the project's advancement and emphasized the importance of Hydrogen Fuel Switching in their plans for the refinery and the UK energy sector. Martin Simmonite, Senior Vice President for UK Operations at Wood, highlighted the critical role of this decarbonization project in supporting the energy transition and ensuring energy security for the UK while creating employment opportunities in industrial regions.
