The AD Ports Group, Transmar, and Orascom Construction have joined forces to establish a green methanol storage and export facility in Egypt, focusing on providing low-carbon fuel for maritime transport. Green methanol, derived from green hydrogen, is hailed as a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuels, offering benefits such as low toxicity, clean combustion, and ease of storage and transportation. The facility's development aligns with the global trend towards decarbonisation, aiming to address the challenges faced by industries in reducing their carbon footprint. With over 100 methanol-fuelled ships expected to be operational by 2026, the demand for green methanol is set to rise significantly, with projections estimating a four million tonne per year demand in the coming five years. The initiative not only supports the UAE's decarbonisation objectives but also spearheads the shift towards green hydrogen-based fuels in the maritime sector, in line with global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote environmental sustainability.
