Industrial leaders from around the world gathered in Baku this week to advocate for urgent action in scaling demand for clean hydrogen and its derivatives by 2030. This call to action, supported by nearly two dozen industry associations globally, emphasizes the need for robust incentives and mandates to drive the adoption of hydrogen technologies. The coalition highlights the significant benefits that can be achieved by mid-century, including the abatement of 60-80 gigatons of CO₂, savings of $3.7 trillion in capital investments, and the creation of 25 million jobs worldwide.
While global investment in hydrogen has seen a seven-fold increase in the last four years, reaching $75 billion across 434 large-scale projects, there is a gap between current deployment levels and the targets for 2030. Governments are urged to implement policies that can increase hydrogen deployment across sectors to meet the 75 Mt p.a. goal by 2030.
The Hydrogen Council, alongside partner associations, stresses the importance of immediate government actions to advance hydrogen deployment. These actions include introducing incentives and mandates, developing infrastructure, and integrating hydrogen into countries' Nationally Determined Contributions. The Council stands ready to collaborate with governments to expedite the energy transition, enhance energy security, and ensure just transitions globally.
The Hydrogen Council, a global CEO-led initiative, comprises 140 companies from 20 countries and is committed to unlocking the sustainability potential of clean hydrogen. The Council aims to drive innovation, create jobs, and deliver social value through the promotion of hydrogen ecosystems worldwide. By advocating for international standards and collaboration between industry, governments, investors, and civil society, the Council seeks to accelerate the deployment of reliable hydrogen solutions at scale.
