Green Hydrogen Collaboration in Italy for European Supply Chain
Key Ideas
  • Acwa Power and Snam are partnering to establish a green hydrogen supply chain from Saudi Arabia to Europe, focusing on new low-carbon molecules.
  • The collaboration includes evaluating the development of an ammonia import terminal in Italy for the SoutH2 Corridor project, a 3,300km hydrogen pipeline connecting regions in Europe.
  • With a focus on decarbonisation and meeting EU targets, Snam's CEO emphasizes the need for all manufacturing sectors to adopt available technologies.
  • Acwa Power's expanding green hydrogen portfolio includes projects in Indonesia and Saudi Arabia, with commercial production set to start in 2026.
Acwa Power and Snam have announced a partnership to explore investments in setting up a green hydrogen supply chain, with a particular focus on establishing a reliable and cost-effective supply route from Saudi Arabia to Europe. To facilitate the delivery of green hydrogen, the companies will also assess the development of an ammonia import terminal in Italy as part of the SoutH2 Corridor project. This project aims to link North Africa, Italy, Austria, and Germany through a 3,300km hydrogen pipeline. Marco Arcelli, CEO of Acwa Power, highlighted the partnership's objective of introducing new low-carbon molecules to reduce emissions in the power sector, with a notable 40% decrease already achieved in the past two decades. Snam's CEO, Stefano Venier, stressed the urgency for decisive action across all manufacturing sectors to meet the European Union's ambitious decarbonisation targets using all available technologies. The collaboration aligns with Acwa Power's commitment to green hydrogen initiatives, including the development of a significant facility in Indonesia and the Neom Green Hydrogen Project in Saudi Arabia. The Neom project, scheduled for completion in late 2026, aims to produce 1.2 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually. Overall, the joint efforts of Acwa Power and Snam signal a positive step towards advancing green hydrogen solutions and contributing to the global transition to sustainable energy sources.
