During the 2024 World Rally Championship (WRC) in Japan, Hyundai Motor Group's Euisun Chung discussed potential collaboration with Japan's Toyota Motor in the field of hydrogen-powered mobility. The discussions arose following Chung's meeting with Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda at the racing event in Aichi Prefecture, marking their second meeting within a short span. This marks a significant development as it is the first time Chung has publicly mentioned the possibility of cooperation with Toyota in hydrogen initiatives. The collaboration talks first surfaced after a meeting between Chung and Toyoda at a racing event in South Korea, jointly organized by the two automakers. Hyundai, which already offers the Nexo hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), has a rich history in hydrogen research dating back to 1998. The automaker has unveiled a new FCEV concept named the Initium. The Nexo competes globally with Toyota's Mirai FCEV model. At the 2024 WRC, where the Hyundai team excelled with Thierry Neuville securing the drivers' championship and Toyota winning the manufacturers' championship, Chung lauded the team's performance and expressed pride in Neuville's victory. He highlighted that such victories serve as motivation for Hyundai to continue its passion for researching and developing cars with excellence. This emerging partnership between Hyundai and Toyota in the hydrogen sector signifies a promising step towards advancing hydrogen-powered vehicles and fostering innovation in the automotive industry.
