Mongolia is looking to significantly increase its coal exports to China by nearly a fifth in 2025, targeting 100 million tons compared to the previous year's 84 million tons. This expansion comes as part of a broader energy cooperation effort with international partners, particularly China. The recent agreement between Mongolia and China paved the way for a new cross-border rail link to facilitate increased coal exports, with an expected capacity boost of 30 million tons. In addition to coal, Mongolia is also focusing on diversifying its energy sector by venturing into renewables, hydrogen fuel, and natural gas transit. The nation is actively involved in discussions regarding the Power of Siberia 2 pipeline, a proposed natural gas conduit through Mongolia connecting Russia and China. Despite delays due to price negotiations, Mongolia remains committed to facilitating progress in the talks. Furthermore, Mongolia is exploring the potential of utilizing its coal reserves to produce hydrogen and is in talks with Middle Eastern countries for potential hydrogen exports. With natural resources comprising a significant portion of Mongolia's economy, the country aims to leverage its abundant supply to become a prominent player in the global energy market in the upcoming years.
