Oman and Bulgaria are on the verge of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen their energy cooperation, touching on key areas such as oil, gas, renewables, and notably, hydrogen. The agreement, expected to be finalized within the next two months, follows discussions between Bulgaria’s Minister of Energy, Vladimir Malinov, and Oman’s Minister of Energy and Minerals, Eng. Salim al Aufi. The envisioned collaboration aims to delve into renewable energy production, storage, and investment opportunities in Bulgaria, with a specific focus on the potential for Omani investments and LNG supplies. Minister Malinov highlighted the significance of long-term LNG supplies, aligning with Bulgaria's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 while ensuring economic competitiveness. The ministers also explored the prospects of cooperation in the hydrogen sector, with Bulgaria positioning itself as a pathway for hydrogen producers and traders entering the European market. Aufi expressed interest in Bulgaria’s expertise in pumped-storage hydropower plants for storing renewable energy. Additionally, discussions included the possibility of LNG supply for the upcoming winter season and a joint project with Greece for a hydrogen interconnector. The MoU is anticipated to formalize these discussions and establish a foundation for robust bilateral energy relations between Oman and Bulgaria, fostering potential collaborations in hydrogen and renewable energy storage.
