ProtonH2's Project Apollo: Revolutionizing Hydrogen Production from Disused Oil Assets
Key Ideas
  • Canadian start-up ProtonH2 aims to produce up to 500 tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen daily from disused oil assets at less than $1/kg.
  • The Project Apollo, set in Saskatchewan, utilizes ProtonH2's ISHG™ process, injecting dioxygen into oil wells to generate hydrogen syngas.
  • Expected to begin construction in Q4 2024, Project Apollo plans to showcase cost efficiency and sustainability in repurposing existing infrastructure.
  • CEO Paul Sandhu emphasizes that the project is not just about hydrogen production but about setting new standards for energy sector sustainability.
ProtonH2, a Canadian start-up formerly known as Proton Technologies, is making significant strides in the hydrogen production sector with its ambitious Project Apollo. The company, based in Calgary, is set to produce up to 500 tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen per day from disused oil and gas assets, with the target price of less than $1/kg. The project, located near Kerrobert, Saskatchewan, will employ ProtonH2's innovative ISHG™ process, involving the injection of dioxygen into oil wells to generate high-concentration hydrogen syngas. Although the process does produce CO2, the company claims that it naturally sequesters 15-20% of the emissions. ProtonH2 has selected Propak Systems as its EPC partner for Project Apollo, which aims to start construction in Q4 2024 and make its first hydrogen deliveries in H1 2025. The project is not only about hydrogen production but also about showcasing the potential for cost efficiencies and sustainability in the energy sector, according to CEO Paul Sandhu. This initiative highlights the growing trend of repurposing old oil assets for low-cost hydrogen production, with other start-ups like Gold H2 in Houston also exploring similar strategies. The development of Project Apollo signals a significant step towards revolutionizing hydrogen production and setting new benchmarks for environmental sustainability in the energy industry.
