Despite its heavy reliance on oil and gas, which dominate the economy and power generation, the Kingdom is proactively investing in cleantech projects as part of its Vision 2030 strategy. The Energy Industries Council's latest report provides insights into Saudi Arabia's energy landscape, showcasing a shift towards renewable energy sources like solar and wind power. In addition to ramping up renewable energy projects, Saudi Arabia is making significant strides in hydrogen production and carbon capture initiatives. The country plans to produce 4 million tonnes of clean hydrogen annually by 2035, with a substantial investment of $16.1 billion to achieve this target. Projects such as the NEOM Green Hydrogen Facility are pivotal in realizing this ambition. Furthermore, Saudi Aramco aims to capture 14 million tonnes of carbon each year by 2035, with the upcoming Jubail Industrial City CCS hub playing a crucial role in this endeavor. By aiming to have 50% of its power generation capacity sourced from renewables by 2030 and committing to stringent environmental measures like fitting fossil fuel power stations with CCS technology, Saudi Arabia is demonstrating a proactive approach towards sustainability.
