TotalEnergies Collaborates on Massive Green Hydrogen Project in Tunisia
Key Ideas
  • TotalEnergies partners with EREN Groupe and Verbund to develop a green hydrogen project in Tunisia, aiming to produce one million tonnes of hydrogen annually.
  • The project, named H2 Notos, will utilize onshore wind and solar power to produce green hydrogen, which will be exported to Europe via the SoutH2 Corridor.
  • Verbund will manage the transportation of hydrogen to central Europe, fostering job creation in Tunisia and supporting sustainable economic development.
  • The CEOs of TotalEnergies and Verbund express optimism about the project's potential to supply green hydrogen at scale and drive the transition to sustainable energy.
TotalEnergies has signed an MOU with Tunisia to develop a major green hydrogen project named H2 Notos, in collaboration with EREN Groupe and Verbund. The project aims to initially produce 200,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, with a long-term goal of reaching one million tonnes. H2 Notos will use electrolysers powered by onshore wind and solar projects, supported by desalinated sea water. The produced hydrogen will be exported to Europe through the SoutH2 Corridor, connecting North Africa to Italy, Austria, and Germany. TotalEnergies and Verbund will lead the development and operation of the project, with Verbund managing the transport of hydrogen to central Europe. The CEOs of both companies are positive about the project's potential to create jobs in Tunisia and support sustainable economic development. The collaboration is seen as a significant step towards establishing a reliable supply of green hydrogen for Europe and facilitating the transition to sustainable energy sources.
