Trelleborg Sealing Solutions Launches H2Pro Range for Hydrogen Applications
Key Ideas
  • Trelleborg Sealing Solutions has introduced the H2Pro range consisting of over 20 sealing compounds tailored for various stages of the hydrogen value chain.
  • The materials in the range are designed to withstand high pressures, low temperatures, and resist permeation, ensuring durability in hydrogen applications.
  • James Simpson highlighted the challenges in sealing hydrogen due to its unique properties but emphasized the importance of Trelleborg's proprietary testing protocols for ensuring reliable and efficient hydrogen applications.
Trelleborg Sealing Solutions has unveiled the H2Pro range, a comprehensive collection of more than 20 sealing compounds specifically crafted for different phases of the hydrogen value chain, encompassing production, transport, storage, and end-use. These materials have been rigorously tested and proven to endure harsh application environments, such as high pressures, low temperatures, and permeation challenges. By addressing issues like rapid gas decompression (RGD), the compounds exhibit superior wear and extrusion resistance. James Simpson, the global segment director energy at Trelleborg, acknowledged the complexities associated with sealing hydrogen, emphasizing the significance of the newly developed H2Pro range. Simpson noted the absence of industry standards tailored for hydrogen applications, highlighting the inadequacy of repurposing existing standards from the oil and gas sector. To address this gap, Trelleborg established proprietary testing protocols to simulate real-world hydrogen scenarios, ensuring the reliability, efficiency, and economic viability of products. The proprietary test standards introduced by Trelleborg encompass critical aspects like hydrogen permeation, endurance validation, and hydrogen compatibility, including the crucial ability to withstand rapid gas decompression. Rapid gas decompression poses a significant risk as it can lead to seal failure when hydrogen permeates under pressure, causing blistering and cracking. Through its innovative testing methodologies, Trelleborg aims to instill confidence in customers, facilitating the seamless adoption of hydrogen technologies and supporting the ongoing energy transition.
