Veer Partners with Fosen Shipyard to Develop Zero-Emission Container Ship
Key Ideas
- Veer collaborates with Fosen Shipyard to construct two wind-powered and hydrogen-assisted container ships, aiming to create the first clean container ship to cross an ocean.
- The vessel will incorporate hydrogen fuel cells and DynaRig sails, providing both primary and secondary propulsion systems for efficient and environmentally friendly operations.
- With approvals from regulatory bodies like the IMO and financial backing from Prow Capital, Veer is set to revolutionize the shipping industry by introducing non-carbon emitting vessels.
- The lead Naval Architect highlights the importance of alternative power sources and optimized ship design in achieving the goal of sustainable shipping practices.
Veer has entered into a partnership with Fosen Shipyard to develop, construct, sell, and purchase two 100m-long wind-powered and hydrogen-assisted container vessels. These ships are expected to be the first clean container ships to cross an ocean, marking a significant milestone in sustainable shipping. The container ships will feature cutting-edge technology, including hydrogen fuel cells and DynaRig sails, for efficient propulsion. Veer's Design N°1 has been recognized for its 'absolute zero emissions' by the IMO and has received approvals from the American Bureau of Shipping and the European Maritime Safety Agency. Each vessel, costing around €41m ($44m), will have a primary propulsion system capable of traveling at 18 knots with a range of up to 10,400 miles using DynaRig sails. The secondary propulsion system, powered by hydrogen fuel cells, will offer a speed of 11 knots and a range of 1,200 miles. To support this innovative project, Veer has secured a €50m ($54m) letter of intent from Prow Capital and is in the process of fundraising through a Series A investment round. The lead Naval Architect at Veer, Scott McClure, emphasizes the importance of transitioning to non-carbon emitting power sources in the shipping industry and expresses a commitment to delivering sustainable vessels for commercial operations.
