Yara International Launches Europe's Largest Green Hydrogen Facility for Ammonia Production
Key Ideas
  • Yara International has inaugurated Europe's largest green hydrogen facility at its Heroya plant in Porsgrunn, Norway, aiming to produce low-carbon footprint fertilisers using renewable ammonia feedstock.
  • The facility, with a 24-MW electrolyser, has the capacity to produce 20,500 tonnes per year of ammonia, significantly contributing to the company's decarbonisation efforts and cutting 41,000 tpy of CO2 emissions.
  • Supported by a grant from Enova, the project saw a successful inauguration following ramp-up operations, surpassing Iberdrola and Fertiberia's facility in Spain to become the largest electrolyser in Europe.
  • Yara's ambitious decarbonisation plans include complete decarbonisation within five to seven years, with a focus on producing low-carbon ammonia using renewable energy sources and CCS technology.
Yara International, a leading fertiliser producer, has unveiled Europe's most substantial green hydrogen facility at its Heroya plant in Porsgrunn, Norway, with a prime focus on producing green ammonia. The 24-MW electrolyser at the plant is now operational, showcasing the company's commitment to decarbonisation efforts. The facility has already commenced the production of renewable hydrogen and ammonia, delivering the first batches of low-carbon fertilisers to Swedish cooperative Lantmannen. By utilizing water electrolysis and renewable energy through proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology, the plant is set to reduce CO2 emissions by 41,000 tpy. Supported by Enova's grant, Yara's project has seen significant progress and is poised to lead in green hydrogen production in Europe. Despite challenges faced by other demonstration plants, Yara remains steadfast in its goal to achieve complete decarbonisation within the next five to seven years. The produced fertilisers will be part of Yara's new product portfolio, which includes a range of low-carbon ammonia products leveraging carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology. Yara's holistic approach towards decarbonisation aims to revolutionize the fertiliser industry by introducing sustainable practices and green technologies.
