Yara International Launches Europe's Largest Green Hydrogen Facility in Norway
Key Ideas
  • Yara International inaugurated Europe's largest green hydrogen facility in Porsgrunn, Norway, aiming to produce green ammonia for sustainable fertiliser production.
  • The 24-MW electrolyser, powered by renewable energy, has the capacity to produce low-carbon footprint fertilisers, reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 41,000 tons per year.
  • The project received a significant grant for construction and aligns with Yara's ambitious decarbonisation goals, including plans for complete decarbonisation within the next five to seven years.
Yara International, a leading fertiliser producer, has launched Europe's biggest green hydrogen facility at its Heroya plant in Porsgrunn, Norway. The facility is set to produce green ammonia for sustainable fertiliser production. The 24-MW electrolyser, the largest in Europe, has already begun producing low-carbon footprint fertilisers using renewable ammonia feedstock. This initiative is part of Yara's decarbonisation efforts, with plans to fully decarbonise the complex within the next five to seven years. The project, supported by a grant from Enova, is expected to significantly reduce CO2 emissions at the site. Yara's CEO highlighted the importance of this milestone in decarbonising the food value chain and energy-intensive industries. The company is also exploring low-carbon ammonia production with carbon capture and storage technology to further reduce emissions. Yara has additional plans for reducing CO2 emissions at its other plants and is evaluating large-scale low-carbon ammonia production projects in the U.S. This venture is a significant step towards promoting sustainability and renewable energy in the fertiliser industry, showcasing innovation and commitment to climate action.
