Canadian Companies Collaborate on Innovative Hydrogen-Powered Gas Turbine Power Plant
Key Ideas
  • Nu:ionic Technologies and HybriGenix Futures in Canada are partnering to develop a 100MW gas turbine power plant powered by low-carbon hydrogen blends.
  • The project includes 25MW hydrogen-ready power generation units using Nu:ionic's innovative microwave reforming technology for efficient hydrogen production.
  • The goal is to increase hydrogen production capacity at the site to 96 tonnes per day and eventually use 100% hydrogen to fuel the gas turbines, aiming for a flexible and clean power plant.
  • The collaboration aims to demonstrate the viability of integrating hydrogen technology with gas turbines to balance intermittent electrical grids and decarbonize energy sources.
Nu:ionic Technologies and HybriGenix Futures, two Canadian companies, have entered into a partnership to construct a groundbreaking gas turbine power plant near Edmonton, Alberta. The project aims to incorporate microwave-produced low-carbon hydrogen blends to power the turbines. Initially, the site will feature two 25MW hydrogen-ready power generation units alongside a hydrogen production facility utilizing Nu:ionic's Nu-X Smart Reforming technology. This technology, driven by renewable microwave energy, enhances hydrogen production efficiency by targeting catalysts directly. The produced hydrogen will be blended with natural gas for turbine fuel, with plans to increase hydrogen production capacity to 96 tonnes per day and transition to 100% hydrogen. The collaborative project seeks to showcase the potential of clean power plants that can adapt to variable electrical grids, contributing to carbon reduction efforts. Both companies express optimism about the project's impact on energy transition and decarbonization, emphasizing the innovative approach to hydrogen integration with gas turbines.
